Unless there's something in common between the helper and one who needs help, the one who needs help will not accept it. And often even if there is something in common, the one who needs help often won't accept it anyway. That is true of how addictions control people, no matter the color of their skin. As to any white person other than law enforcement trying to keep drugs our of your neighborhoods, why do you think white people would have any more success than black people have had in trying to get control of this drug issue?
ReplyDeleteI've lived in the South, having been raised in the North, and it amazed me how little the blacks were willing to have contact with whites. My best friend was a black woman that I worked with, but she refused to come to my home to visit. However, she invited me to hers, and I went. We were in the same economic bracket so it wasn't a matter of a money issue.
Please don't allow yourself to depend on using the Jim Crow laws, segregation, etc. as the reason you can't get ahead. You are selling yourself short if you don't give yourself credit for having the courage, wisdom, and stamina that it takes to get through challenging times. I fear you're letting your bitterness against some white people who have hurt you affect your attitude towards all white people. While clinging on to the past, you will be unable to view the future or feel the present. Certainly there have been injustices. No one is denying that. And we could keep going on and on and on about it. But while that's happening, YOU aren't progressing! Don't you understand that part of it? It is not a white holding you back then. It is YOURSELF holding you back because you have allowed the past to have power over you.
I honestly hope you can find a way to progress and live in the present, looking forward to the future. Everyone deserves to live like that, unless, of course, they have committed a crime for which some of the privileges of our society are taken away.

But I think I know why.
